Acute and chronic pain syndromes are some of the most common health problems facing society today, causing impact not only on the individual, but on the national or even global level. Next to heart disease and cancer, chronic pain is the third most common heath care issue in the United States, with the combined annual cost of lost work days, doctor visits, hospital stays, pain-reducing drugs, and disability totaling an estimated $4 billion dollars.
Clinical studies support that acupuncture is an effective modality in the treatment of almost all kinds of pain conditions, including the following: migraines, neuralgia, neck and back pain, herniated discs, TMJ, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, frozen shoulder, fibromyalgia, dysmenorrhea, osteoporosis, sports and other injuries, surgical pain, and even cancer pain. Researchers have discovered beneficial immune and endocrine alterations following acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture may actually help prevent pain by acting on the sympathetic nervous system and by stimulating the body to produce endorphins, a biochemical substance naturally produced by the body, to help reduce pain.
CHRONIC PAIN AND CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY
Long lasting pain often creates a chronic pain cycle: Pain, lack of exercise and physical activity, chronic stress and fatigue, depression, muscle tension, tightness, cramping, sensitive nerves, and again, pain. Patients suffer from this pain cycle. Some patients even feel that their quality of life changes completely due to a chronic pain condition.
When someone lives with the day-to-day problem of chronic pain, it can have a profound affect on quality of life. One of the possible resulting conditions might be addiction to their medication long after the medication is required. This deserves special attention and treatment requires great sensitivity and understanding from professionals who have expertise in treating these co-existing conditions.
Narcotics/opiates increase pain perception through both mechanisms of increasing allodynia, and hyperalegisia. The side effect of the use of narcotics are abuse, dependency, and addiction to drugs. These illnesses can produce the constellation of symptom complexes seen in chronic persistent pain syndromes that result in the unstable medical conditions that are referred to us.
